Woman Discovered 20 Feet Deep in Sewer After Worker Hears Scream

A woman was rescued by the authorities after she fell at least twenty feet into a sewer well in the state of Kentucky.

The incident took place on the morning of Thursday, June 5, when emergency crews responded to Cox Avenue after receiving a report of a person who was trapped inside of a well.

When the crews arrived, they were greeted by a sanitation worker who had previously called 911 and given confirmation that a person was trapped inside the building.

According to Anchorage Fire and EMS, “After assessing the scene and confirming that the victim was conscious and alert, Rescue 33 and supporting units conducted a confined space rescue operation,” the statement read.

It was while performing preventative maintenance in a sewer pumping station that the worker from the Metropolitan Sewer District fell between twenty and twenty-five feet into the well, according to the officials.

A “pick-off” rescue system was established by crews using a tri-pod device, as can be seen in a video that was shared on Facebook by Anchorage Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

To reach the woman and secure her in a harness, a rescuer descended into the well and reached her position. 25 minutes later, both were safely brought to the surface, according to the authorities.

“The victim was treated at the scene by AMFEMS Medic Units and later transported to University of Louisville Hospital for observation as she appeared physically unharmed,” Anchorage Middleton Fire and EMS continued.

“After a while, I heard a sound, and I couldn’t tell where it was coming from because there were, like, bushes around this well,” Keith Ware, the sanitation worker stated. “So I heard someone yell out, help! Again! And I went through the bushes and looked down this well, and I saw her.”

“She was responsive,” Ware continued. ”She was very excited to see me. So I got on my phone, called my dispatcher, let her know where I was, and, you know, then she sent the EMS, fire department, everybody.”

The authorities expressed their gratitude to the sanitation worker for serving as an alert to them, in addition to the emergency crews.

“His actions no doubt contributed to a successful outcome,” according to the department.
