Woman fatally shot, Deputy injured after 100 MPH chase ends in Dooly County

A high-speed chase that began in South Georgia ended in gunshots early Friday morning, killing one lady and injuring a deputy, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

According to the GBI, the pursuit began soon after 2 a.m. on April 4, when Cook County deputies attempted to stop a Cadillac sedan for going over 100 mph on Interstate 75. When the vehicle refused to stop, the pursuit continued north across many counties.

The Turner County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit, which ended dramatically around Exit 109 in Dooly County. Deputies employed the PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) tactic to immobilize the fleeing car.

As cops approached the automobile, the driver allegedly shot one of the deputies. Law enforcement responded fire, fatally wounding the driver, who was declared dead on the scene.

The injured deputy was taken to a neighboring hospital and is likely to recover.

On April 8, the GBI identified the woman who was killed as Paige M. Newsum, 57, of Bradenton, Florida. No other information was shared.

The GBI took up the investigation at the request of the Turner County Sheriff’s Office. Once finished, the case will be turned over to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for consideration.
