ALABASTER: Alabaster’s Ward 6 representative, Zach Zahariadis, has declared that he would not be running for reelection.
Zahariadis announced the decision on social media on Wednesday, July 30, stating that he felt compelled to take advantage of a fresh chance.
I’ve made the decision to not run for reelection to the Alabaster City Council, Ward 6, after giving it some thought. “Said Zahariadis.” Making this choice was difficult for me because I genuinely care about the people I have been able to assist along the journey and I adore our city. One of the biggest privileges of my life has been serving in this capacity, and I am sincerely appreciative of the chance to serve such a unique town.
Zahariadis revealed that he has recently been looking for God’s will for his life and feels prompted to seize a fresh opportunity that has been placed on his heart.
Zahariadis stated, “I have asked Him to guide me in every decision I make, and I am choosing to follow where He leads, even if it means letting go of something I love.”
Following the resignation of former Council member Seth Gandy, Zahariadis was initially appointed to the Alabaster City Council in April 2022.
Zahariadis was eligible to run in the Municipal Election on Tuesday, August 26 against Jamia Alexander James, a former member of the Alabaster City Schools Board of Education, prior to his announcement.
Zahariadis conveyed his appreciation to Mayor Scott Brakefield and the other council members he has served with.
Zahariadis added, “I also want to convey my profound respect and gratitude for the other members of our City Council.” Their dedication to our city, leadership, and wisdom have taught me a lot. Serving alongside them has been an honor.
Additionally, I genuinely respect our Mayor Scott Brakefield’s commitment to Alabaster. He is a remarkable leader who provides vision, power, and humility to our city. In addition to his leadership, I’m incredibly grateful for the friendship we’ve formed.
Zahariadis thanked everyone for their support throughout his tenure serving the city of Alabaster and beyond as he wrapped up his remarks.
“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped, inspired, and believed in me throughout this journey,” Zahariadis stated. It has helped me build a solid foundation of wonderful individuals in my life, and I will always be grateful for those connections.
At its subsequent meeting, the Alabaster City Council will have the opportunity to approve a resolution designating Jamia Alexander James as the new Ward 6 representative for the upcoming term once Zahariadis formally submits a form to withdraw from the campaign.
The first organizational meeting for the next Alabaster City Council will be held on Monday, November 3, and the next council will take office on the first Monday in November after the election.
