The California Highway Patrol reports that a pregnant woman, 25, and her unborn child perished in a two-car collision near San Jose on Thursday night.
According to CHP Officer Ross Lee, two children, ages two and five, were also in the vehicle and were taken to Valley Medical Center as a precaution. Neither of the two children looked hurt.
North of Bird Avenue on southbound Interstate 280, the collision was reported at approximately 7:30 p.m.
According to Lee, the pregnant woman was operating a green Honda Civic when she apparently lost control of her vehicle, crossed all lines of traffic, and collided with a Ford F-150 pickup.
Lee said that she was thrown onto the freeway as a result. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, according to investigators.
According to Lee, crews raced to her aid but she was unresponsive. According to authorities, she and her fetus passed away from their wounds.
“Every single life matters to us,” said Lee. “When we lose one life, a young mother, obviously, we have other children that are affected by this. So yes this scenario is very sad.”
Lee stated that while the crash is being investigated, it is unknown whether drug or alcohol use played a role.
