9th grader performs CPR for 10 minutes, Saves Father after collapse in Nevada

A ninth-grade student in Nevada is being hailed as a hero after using CPR skills she learnt in her health science class to save her father’s life.

Iris Ibarra Montes, a ninth-grader at Carson High School, was at home with her father two weeks earlier when he collapsed due to a medical issue. She promptly recognised the signs of cardiac arrest, contacted 911, and started administering chest compressions, according to a Facebook post from the Carson City School District on Thursday.

Iris gave her father CPR for more than ten minutes while waiting for rescuers to arrive. She praises her health science teacher, Frank Sakelarios, with teaching her how to react and providing hands-on instruction in his class.

“I just remembered what we practiced in class,” Iris informed the school district. “It all happened so fast, but I knew I had to keep going until help arrived.”

Iris’ father was unresponsive when paramedics came, but they were able to revive him. They credited his daughter’s prompt response with stabilising him before transporting him to the hospital.

Iris’ father received an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator and is expected to fully recover.

“Iris is an outstanding student and a shining example of how education can be applied in real-world emergency situations,” Sakelarios told the school district. “She has already distinguished herself as one of the kindest, most hardworking, and deeply committed individuals – both in her academics and in her devotion to her family.”

After working with the paramedics and nurses who saved her father’s life, Iris intends to further her medical education and pursue a career in nursing.
