Detroit man critically injured in I-94 crash after Sterling Heights Police chase

A police pursuit early Monday morning resulted in an accident on I-94.

The severe crash wrecked a vehicle and critically injured its driver, the suspect who evaded police.

All westbound lanes of I-94 were closed Monday morning following a police pursuit that began in Sterling Heights and concluded in a horrific crash on the highway.

The incident occurred around Nine Mile, causing enormous backups for everyone driving west into the city.

The pursuit began at 3:15 a.m., when Sterling Heights police attempted to pull over a black Dodge Charger. It instead sped away, sparking the chase.

Sterling Heights police reported that the attempted traffic stop was due to a stolen car. The chase went through numerous communities before finishing on the highway.

The driver was ejected following the incident and is classified in critical condition.

While police stated that the chase was caused by a stolen vehicle, they declined to provide further information while the investigation continued.

The driver was recognized as a 27-year-old male from Detroit. He has a criminal record, but no other identifying information was provided.

In an interview with FOX 2, Sterling Heights police stated they attempted to use stop sticks twice to block the vehicle from fleeing but were unsuccessful.

As the driver fled police, they lost control and went down the hill onto I-94, throwing him out of the vehicle.

According to police, the chase is linked to a stolen Chevrolet Camaro that was taken from a driveway near the Metropolitan Parkway at Dequindre in Sterling Heights around 3:15 a.m.

Police used cameras to locate the stolen vehicle and identified the Dodge Charger as a suspect in the original crime.

There were no police officers harmed during the chase.

A Sterling Heights police captain described the incident as what happens when officers try to apprehend bad people.

“The suspect doesn’t care, they’re not caring about anybody’s commute, he’s not caring about any of the safety of anybody else,” according to him. Captain Mario Bastianelli. “They’re fleeing at high speeds, obviously going through multiple jurisdictions – there’s no care, he just wants to get away and evade police.”
