Ohio troopers and wrong-way driver exchange gunfire before fatal shooting Police footage

Additional footage from the trooper’s body camera shows that the driver who was shot dead by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper repeatedly raised and lowered her hands after showing a pistol.

Union Township Police published its dash and body camera footage earlier that day, while Highway Patrol released new film late Wednesday, April 30.

The video documents the events leading up to the fatal shooting on April 1 between the trooper and 34-year-old Kelsey Hildal, who was reportedly heading north in the interstate’s southbound lanes at approximately 11 p.m. that evening, according to highway patrol troopers.

The unidentified trooper spots the Blue Ash woman driving down the highway in the opposite direction and swings around to catch up with her. The policeman purposefully rams his cruiser into Hildal’s automobile, swerving it next to a concrete barrier to stop her, while she slows while driving in the shoulder with her hazard lights on.

Hildal raises her hands, pointing toward the roof of her car with what looks to be a weapon in her right hand as the trooper signals that he has stopped her.

“She’s got a gun,” the trooper shouts into his radio.

“Show me your hands! Show me your hands now!” the trooper yells out toward Hildal, who drops the gun but continues to raise and lower her hands.

Hildal is told repeatedly not to move or approach anything by the trooper, who then exits his cruiser and holds her at gunpoint. At one moment, the officer fires as Hildal keeps raising and lowering her hands out the driver’s side window.

In quick succession, twelve shots are fired, but the identity of the shooter is still unknown. Citing the current investigation, the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation declined to comment after being requested by the highway patrol to look into the shooting. Union Township Police, who were also on the scene, shared film in which their officers state that the woman and trooper fired gunfire at one point.

Hildal screams as the video goes on, and the trooper stops for around fifteen seconds before shooting her once more while shouting for her to raise her hands once more.

Officers approach the vehicle and decide to pull the cruiser away so they can reach the woman’s car door, which the cruiser had blocked, according to Union Township police video.

Hildal’s SUV, still in drive, moves forward as they shift the cruiser into reverse. Unexpectedly, a cop shoots many times at its tires. The vehicle hits the concrete barrier on the opposite side of the highway after officers let it to roll forward.

As officials attempt to enter the vehicle to retrieve Hildal, two dogs are spotted inside. In a hurry, the trooper smashes the passenger window to open the door and enter the vehicle. As police start to remove her body from the vehicle, one of the dogs leaps out. First responders arrive and start chest compressions, but according to authorities, Hildal passed away at the site from her wounds.

Hildal is seen with a helmet close by and wearing what looks to be a black tactical vest that may be bulletproof.
