According to Oregon State Police, a suspect who allegedly brandished a gun at individuals at the Santiam Rest Area on Interstate 5 was taken into custody on May 2.
As of 4:50 p.m., the Oregon Department of Transportation reported that southbound Interstate 5 was reopened after being temporarily closed in the vicinity of the rest area approximately 10 miles south of Salem.
While the suspect was being arrested, police blocked access to the rest area.
According to police, the individual got inside a car as troopers got to the rest area. As of 4:45 p.m., the individual was not complying, according to the police, who were trying to persuade them to turn themselves in.
Up to the intersection of Interstate 5 and Highway 22, traffic was backed up.
There was also significant congestion on the northbound route into Millersburg.
At milepost 244, southbound traffic was diverted onto Jefferson’s surface roadways.
