On April 28, a vehicle crashed into the structure of an after-school program in Illinois, killing four people, including children, and injuring several more, according to officials.
Officers arrived to YNOT After School Camp around 3:20 p.m. local time after a vehicle crashed into the building’s east side, according to an Illinois State Police press release. The after-school camp is held in Chatham, which is south of Springfield.
According to state police, the vehicle impacted many people inside the building before exiting by the west side. The four victims slain in the incident were thought to be between the ages of four and eighteen.
Three of the victims were murdered outside the premises, while another was hit inside, according to state police. Several more were brought to local hospitals via ambulance, while another was transported by helicopter.
According to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon, all four of those deceased were female. No names have been revealed pending communication of families.
The vehicle’s only occupant, the driver, was not harmed and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, according to state police.
According to Chatham Police Deputy Chief Scott Tarter, Chatham Baptist Church, located near the after-school camp, serves as a reunification site for families. Traffic on surrounding streets is halted till further notice, Tarter stated.
The Illinois State Police says it is cooperating with the Chatham Police Department to investigate the fatal crash.
