Four-vehicle collision on HWY 23 leaves 3 hurt; one car landed in ditch after crash

In a four-vehicle incident on Minnesota Highway 23, three drivers were injured. The crash happened on Wednesday morning reportedly between Priam and Willmar.

All three wounded drivers were sent to CentraCare – Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar for treatment.

According to a Minnesota State Patrol crash report, Sumani Malimu, 36, of Willmar, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala westbound on Highway 23 at the intersection with 45th Avenue Southwest when he attempted to pass another vehicle moving westbound. Malimu’s vehicle collided with two eastbound vehicles—a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2010 Ford Escape.

Krystal Enevoldsen, 34, of Maynard, was recognized as the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s driver, while Marlene Phillips, 65, of Clara City, was identified as the Ford Escape driver.

The fourth vehicle involved, a 2019 Buick Envision driven by Rebecca Gregoire, 43, of Granite Falls, was likewise heading east, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Gregoire was not injured in the accident, which involved the Envision colliding with a ditch along the road.

When the crash occurred, everyone was wearing their seat belts. The report states that alcohol is not involved.

Malimu and Phillips’ vehicles both had airbags deployed.

The crash occurred about 7:53 a.m. Wednesday on dry roads.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad, Raymond Fire and Ambulance, and the Willmar Fire Department all aided the Minnesota State Patrol on the incident.
