Gas Prices Surge in L.A. and Orange County; Demand and Supply Issues Blamed

A gallon of standard gasoline at a self-service pump in Los Angeles County cost $4.927 on average on Saturday, four-tenths of a cent more than the previous day. This is the most it has cost since June 6.

The price of a gallon of gas in California was $4.95 on Saturday, 20 cents more than it was the week before.

The average rate was 32 cents higher a year ago, so these rates are still high.

The American Automobile Association said that the price hike is not because of President Trump’s taxes, but because of a number of other things.

“We’ve seen gas prices increase for multitudes of reasons. We’re switching to the summer blend, we’re seeing gas prices increase to shortages at refineries. We’ve also seen gas prices increase due to demand,” said AAA’s Gianella Ghiglino. “We’re going into the warmer months which means more people are doing longer road trips. All of those things contribute to gas prices fluctuating at this time of year.”

A report from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service shows that the average price has gone up 14 of the last 15 days, or 27.8 cents.

It’s 16.3 cents more than a week ago, 19 cents more than a month ago, and 35.7 cents less than a year ago. Since Oct. 5, 2022, when it hit a high of $6.494, it has gone down $1.567.

The average price in Orange County stayed the same at $4.889, which is the most it has been since June 3. It had gone up for 10 days in a row, adding 28.6 cents to its value.

The average price in Orange County is 37 cents less than it was a year ago but 15.2 cents more than it was a week ago and 19.4 cents more than it was a month ago. Since Oct. 5, 2022, when it hit a high of $6.459, it has gone down $1.57.

After going up 11 times in the last 12 days, the national average price went down six-tenths of a cent to $3.262. It’s 32 cents less than a year ago but 10.3 cents more than a week ago and 15.5 cents more than a month ago. Since June 14, 2022, when it hit a high of $5.101, it has gone down $1.754.

There are a few things you can do. Check to see if your car’s maintenance is up to date, and look around for gas stores with lower prices.
