Indiana State Police have apprehended a motorcycle rider accused of exceeding 100 mph while leading police on a pursuit in Tippecanoe County last week.
On April 18, ISP stated that a trooper was patrolling Interstate 65 near the 175-mile marker when he received word that a biker, later identified as 38-year-old James Jenkins, was observed driving northbound at a “high rate of speed” soon before 10 p.m.
The trooper then spotted Jenkins as he reportedly drove past the 180-mile milestone without taillights. According to ISP, the trooper attempted to perform a traffic stop, but Jenkins continued northbound at full speed.
Jenkins continued to go at speeds of exceeding 100 mph, resulting in a pursuit that lasted almost eight miles. ISP said that the speed limit in the area was 70 mph. The trooper eventually called off the pursuit after providing Jenkins’ physical description to surrounding law enforcement agencies.
A short time later, a Remington Police Department officer observed a man believed to be Jenkins exiting I-65 near the 201-mile marker and entering a gas station.
The trooper involved in the initial pursuit arrived on the scene and confirmed that the individual matched the suspect description.
Jenkins was arrested and taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail, where he is facing the following preliminary charges:
- Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon (Level 4 Felony)
- Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun with a Prior Conviction within 15 Years (Level 5 Felony)
- Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle (Level 6 Felony)
- Possession of Marijuana (Class B Misdemeanor)
- Reckless Driving (Class C Misdemeanor)
