No New Social Security Checks in Second Week of May — Here’s Why

No New Social Security Checks in Second Week of May — Here’s Why

Although the United States’ Social Security payment schedule appears to be consistent, there are really several variances.

The dates can occasionally be confusing to those who are eagerly expecting their money, even though payments are structured according to weeks and beneficiary categories.

There is a unique circumstance in May 2025 that makes this the case.

Some beneficiaries will not receive their first retirement cheque until the third week of the month, despite the fact that many retirees anticipate receiving their money in the second week.

This does not indicate a delay on the part of the Administration; rather, it is a result of the way the weeks are structured on the official Social Security calendar.

The good news is that the Social Security Administration is still meeting its regular mailing deadlines in spite of this seeming anomaly.

Knowing which group each retiree is in is crucial for determining when the deposit will actually reach their bank account.

Payments from Social Security during the third week of May

On the 14th, the second Wednesday in May, the first retirement payout will be received. Administratively speaking, this date is included in the third week of Social Security benefits, even though it appears to fall in the second week.

The following two conditions must be fulfilled in order for you to get this payment on May 14:

  • Social Security benefits must have begun after May 1997.
  • You have to be born between the first and the tenth of every month.

Group 2 recipients are those who fulfil these requirements, and they will receive their checks on that day.

On May 14, I will not be eligible for Social Security

There’s nothing to be concerned about if you don’t qualify for the May 14 check. Additional payments from the Administration will still be made throughout the month, particularly on May 21 and May 28.

Group 3, which consists of people whose birthdays fall between the eleventh and the twentieth of the month, will take their turn on the twenty-first.

Group 4, which comprises children born between the 21st and the 31st, will get compensation on the 28th.

In this manner, all retirees who received benefits after May 1997 will receive them in May, but in various weeks based on when they were born.

Additional Social Security benefits

The Administration will also issue a second cheque in May in addition to retirement benefits. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will be paid out on the 30th of the month, and this is the second installment.

This kind of additional payment happens when an SSI payment is shifted ahead to the prior month because the first day of the subsequent month falls on a weekend.

As a result, recipients of this benefit will get two May SSI payments.
