Tampa man drove 140 mph, ignored lights before crashing in Pinellas Arrested

A Tampa man was accused of leading Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a chase that reached 140 mph.

According to an arrest record, FHP troopers were investigating allegations of street racing in Pinellas Park early Sunday morning when one of them noticed a Ford Mustang travelling at around 110 mph in a 45 mph zone on 28th Street North.

The driver was identified as Roberto Alvarez Santos, 23, of Tampa.

According to the police report, Santos turned onto Grand Avenue and drove “at a high rate of speed.” He was accused of blowing through several intersections without stopping.

A trooper attempted to stop Santos, but he continued west on Gandy Boulevard, reaching speeds of 140 mph, according to FHP. The Mustang drove into the eastbound lanes and continued to flee troopers, driving against the flow of traffic at speeds of 110 mph, according to the arrest report.

Santos was arrested when his Mustang crashed with the centre median on 66th Street North. He was accused of running and escaping police, reckless driving, and resisting an officer without violence.
