The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a four-vehicle crash in Edinburg that killed a father and his four-year-old boy early Monday morning.
During their investigation, officials discovered that the incident occurred about 2:38 a.m. when a white Chevrolet Malibu driven by a single male driver was travelling northbound on U.S. 281 in the southbound lane.
Police believe the driver of the Malibu was intoxicated at the time of the incident after discovering beer cans inside his vehicle. Authorities are still awaiting blood tests.
At the same time, a white Chevrolet Colorado with a female driver and a toddler was going south on U.S. 281, when it went off the road to avoid colliding with the Malibu.
The driver of the Colorado lost control, forcing it to roll over and stop on the southbound frontage road.
The driver and passenger of the Colorado were transferred to DHR Health and are in stable condition.
A black Hyundai Tucson, driven by a man later identified as Mark Anthony Alvarez and his son John Andrew Escamilla, collided with the Malibu while travelling south on U.S. 281.
This spun the Hyundai Tucson across the southbound lanes, causing a white Freightliner tractor-trailer to collide with the Hyundai.
Alvarez, 32, and his kid, both Pharr residents, were transferred to DHR Health and perished as a result of their injuries. According to DPS, the youngster was not properly strapped in his seat.
The driver of the Malibu was also taken to DHR Health, where he is in critical condition.
