210 freeway shut down after suspect dies in fiery police chase crash in Los Angeles County

A high-speed police pursuit on the 210 Freeway in Los Angeles County resulted in a severe crash that killed the suspect.

A California Highway Patrol officer verified that the suspect was pronounced dead at 11:18 a.m. on Friday by L.A. County Fire authorities who attended to the collision. According to a CHP spokesman, the driver was the only one in the automobile, and no one else was wounded in the incident.

The pursuit began in Camarillo with Ventura County Sheriff’s Department deputies and went through Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley, where California Highway Patrol officers took over.

According to Sgt. Monica Smith of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the incident started about 10 a.m. when officers responded to a call about a grand theft at a prominent department store in Camarillo. Responding cops then discovered a car they believed was involved in the crime and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The pursuit began shortly after the suspect refused to stop for police.

According to the aerial footage, the suspect was speeding at speeds of more than 115 mph.

The incident occurred eastbound on the 210 Freeway, just west of State Route 2. The driver plowed into the back of a truck, causing the front driver’s side of the automobile to collide violently with the truck’s rear passenger side. The suspect’s vehicle’s front and side panels were torn off.

CHP officers attempted to treat the suspect before L.A. County Fire officials arrived and pronounced the driver dead.

Officials from the CHP and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department did not release any other information on the suspect.

The 210 Freeway near the incident scene was closed to traffic on Friday. One lane of traffic reopened Friday afternoon, but three lanes on the eastbound side remained closed. According to CHP officers, three lanes of traffic on the transition road from the 210 to the 2 were closed for an undetermined period of time.
