Car hits Horse-drawn carriage in Corpus Christi, Passenger injured and driver flees from crash

A horse-drawn carriage trip along Shoreline Drive on the night of April 12 culminated in a catastrophe when a driver hit the carriage from behind.

Corpus Christi police officers arrived at the scene of the incident in the 800 block of North Shoreline Boulevard at 10:54 p.m. to discover that the driver of the at-fault vehicle had fled the scene, according to a news release.

Officers established that the horse-drawn carriage was heading south in the right lane of Shoreline Boulevard when it was struck from behind by a green passenger automobile.

According to reports, the hit ejected a 24-year-old woman from the carriage. She was brought to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to authorities, after hitting the carriage, the passenger car collided with a red passenger car in the center lane before fleeing.

The vehicle left behind a license plate. Officers looked for the vehicle in several spots but couldn’t find it, they added.

Nobody in the red passenger automobile was wounded.

Police are examining whether speed was a factor in the incident.

While police did not say whether the horse was injured in the crash, a spokesperson for Corpus Christi Carriages, a South Texas-based company that operates horse-drawn carriages in Corpus Christi, primarily downtown, said in an April 13 Facebook post that neither the driver nor the horse were hurt.

“The situation is being managed, and all necessary precautions are being taken,” it said. “Thank you for your understanding, concerns, prayers and cooperation.”

Corpus Christi police request anyone with information on the crash to contact the Corpus Christi Police Department traffic division at 361-886-2596 or Crime Stoppers at 361-888-TIPS.
