Man charged with murder after SUV slams into family on sidewalk in Cottage Grove; 2 dead after crash

Authorities say a man from southern Wisconsin purposely crashed into a family, killing a well-known chiropractor and the family dog while wounding a toddler. The man is charged with various felonies.

Following the April 28 incident, Jeffrey M. Endres, 49, of Cottage Grove, is accused of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, among other offenses, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Local 5 News.

Police from Cottage Grove were dispatched to the 1300 block of Landmark Drive shortly after 6:30 p.m. in response to a complaint of a car striking several pedestrians. When officers got there, they discovered three family members and a dog that had been struck while out on the sidewalk.

Dr. Kami Hansen, her husband, and their kid were named as the victims. While her kid had emergency surgery and is now free, Kami passed away in the hospital. There was nothing medically necessary for her husband. They also killed the family dog.

Endres was discovered nearby injured after his SUV overturned at the location. He allegedly told police that he was “having a bad day” and refused to elaborate when they questioned him about what had transpired. He said to the police that he lost control of the car while traveling at roughly 25 mph to a petrol station.

The husband reported to the police that the SUV seemed to jump the curb without slowing and speed straight for the family. Additionally, a witness reported that the car was moving quickly, estimating that it was moving at 60 miles per hour.

The complaint claims that the husband identified the driver as Endres, a family friend and neighbor whose relationship with the Hansens had lately soured. According to reports, an inquiry into a delicate kid incident involving both families in March 2025 was the cause of the schism.

According to the complaint, Endres received the documents mere hours before the crash after submitting an open records request for the case.

“I’m confident he was intentionally trying to kill us or [my son] at least,” the husband told police.

According to reports, another witness to the collision rushed to the scene and said, “He tried to hit you.”

Endres is charged with:

  • First-degree intentional homicide
    • Up to life in prison
  • Attempted first-degree intentional homicide
    • Up to 60 years in prison
  • Attempted first-degree intentional homicide
    • Up to 60 years in prison
  • Mistreatment of animals
    • Up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine

A $1 million cash bond was imposed for him. On May 14, he is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing.

As the lawsuit progresses through the court system, Local 5 News will keep an eye on it.
