On Sunday, a man was shot by a police officer after investigators reported he was threatening a woman with a knife to her throat.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., an event occurred in the 2400 block of Brasileno Dr., located within a residential area nestled between Nimmo Parkway and Sandbridge Road. This marks the third incident involving law enforcement and gunfire in South Hampton Roads since Friday.
On Sunday night, authorities responded to a report of a domestic dispute in Virginia Beach, where a shooting occurred. Upon arrival, officers found Gokhan Karabulut, who was reportedly wielding a knife and pressing it against a woman’s throat. A spokesperson for the police refrained from disclosing on Monday the nature of the woman’s relationship to Karabulut.
An officer discharged his firearm at Karabulut. A 39-year-old man was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where authorities reported he was in stable condition as of Monday. There were no injuries reported among the officers, while the victim suffered only minor injuries.
On Monday, Karabulut faced charges including abduction, strangulation, child endangerment, and domestic assault. Authorities are currently looking into the shooting with the involvement of the detective bureau and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. The officer in question has been put on critical incident leave, a routine measure as the investigation is ongoing.
Over the weekend, two additional incidents involving officers took place in Norfolk. Both incidents were not life-threatening.
On Friday afternoon, the initial incident took place on Sewell’s Point Road, close to East Little Creek Road. Authorities reported that they were addressing a situation involving a woman who had been part of an altercation the previous day and had come back to the vicinity. Upon the officers’ arrival, the woman brandished a weapon and disregarded their orders to relinquish it, as reported by investigators. Multiple shots were discharged by the officers, hitting her at least once. She was transported to a medical facility with critical injuries and continued to be hospitalised on Monday. Authorities have now filed charges against her for displaying a weapon, assault and battery, as well as grand theft.
Another incident occurred at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Sunday at an apartment complex located on Monticello Avenue, close to MacArthur Mall. Authorities indicated they were addressing several alerts regarding an individual armed with a weapon when they encountered Glendon A. Sumner holding a firearm.
Officers were dismissed following Sumner’s failure to follow their commands to lower the firearm, as stated by the department. Sumner, 38, was admitted to a hospital for care and stayed there on Monday. He now faces charges for displaying a firearm and handling it recklessly.
