A father who was already intoxicated was arrested for reportedly leaving two small children in a car so he could spend the weekend playing skills games at a nearby tobacco shop.
On Saturday, May 3, Kevin Holmes, 43, was charged with DUI, endangering the welfare of minors, and lesser summary offences, such as reckless driving and leaving a child alone in a car.
According to the criminal paperwork, Altoona police were called to Puff SuperValue near 31st Street Dollar General after receiving a report of children being left in a car. When they got there, they discovered two kids, ages five and seven, sitting by themselves in the car without seatbelts or child safety seats. According to the kids, their father was at a store.
According to the complaint, police claim that Holmes approached the front of the store when a bystander yelled inside and claimed to have just stopped in for a minute to buy smokes. Police were told differently by the 911 caller, who claimed to have seen him enter the business before they entered and discovered him playing skill games.
Police arrested Holmes after learning throughout their investigation that he had an outstanding warrant out of Centre County. According to accusations, Holmes failed the routine field sobriety tests after police claimed he was speaking with alcohol on his breath.
According to the police, Holmes consented to a breathalyser test that revealed a detectable level of blood alcohol content. According to the lawsuit, he then gave his agreement to be taken for a blood sample.
Police also discovered that Holmes’ vehicle registration and inspections had expired, and that his licence had been suspended for DUI.
With a $75,000 bail, Holmes was taken to Blair County Prison.
On May 14, a preliminary hearing is planned.
