An officer-involved shooting on Interstate 29 that killed a man Thursday morning and caused traffic jams is being looked into by Kansas City police.
The pursuing suspect was shot by a Riverside police officer and a Platte County sheriff’s deputy, according to KCPD, who claimed during a news conference that the suspect passed away in the hospital.
According to KCPD, the suspect allegedly shot someone during a “domestic dispute” when he was in the Argosy Casino parking lot. According to police, the man is suspected of shooting his ex-wife’s lover many times in the Argosy Casino parking lot.
“It did sound like a gunshot, a muffled gunshot,” Claude Van Zandt said.
He claimed to have heard the first gunshots. He’s lodging in a hotel on the other side of the Argosy Hotel and Casino.
“My room is right there on the other side of that wall,” Van Zandt said, “and that’s not the kind of wall that’s going to stop a gunshot. After you figure out what happened you go, ‘Oh’.”
The man sped away from the police as they tried to pull him over, starting a chase.
According to KCPD, the suspect’s tires deflated from stop sticks, causing him to halt at Interstate 435 and Cookingham. Five minutes passed during the chase.
The suspect was urged to “peacefully surrender” and get out of the vehicle by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office and Riverside Police Department. According to KCPD, those discussions lasted for half an hour.
According to KCPD, the suspect waved a gun at responding officers after exiting the vehicle.
According to KCPD, three responding police then shot him. After being brought to a hospital, he passed away from his wounds.
The suspect’s multiple-shot victim at the casino is likely to make a full recovery.
Around 6:40 a.m., the incident was reported close to I-29 and I-435, according to KCPD. The shooting site is located immediately east of Kansas City International Airport.
The department claims that no KCPD officers were engaged in the incident.
