A US contractor was killed and five US service members and another contractor were injured in a deadly drone attack that took place earlier today in northeast Syria. According to reports, the drone is believed to be of Iranian origin. In response to the attack, President Biden directed the US Central Command forces to carry out precision airstrikes on facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in eastern Syria. The strikes were aimed at protecting US personnel and were conducted to limit the risk of escalation and minimize casualties. Two of the injured service members received on-site treatment, while three others and the contractor were evacuated to Coalition medical facilities in Iraq. US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd J. Austin III, stated that the strikes were necessary to defend American people and that no group would be allowed to attack US troops with impunity.
