Vonderrick Rayford, 51, of Milwaukee, was shot and killed by law enforcement on Interstate 80, according to Iowa authorities.
According to Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante’s news release, the incident occurred early on April 15 when a deputy pulled Rayford over for excessive speeding.
“During the course of the routine traffic stop, he exited his vehicle and opened fire on a Dallas County Deputy,” according to a release. “A brief standoff ensued, during which additional law enforcement officers responded to assist.”
Rayford fired at the other police from the Adair County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and Adel Police Department when they arrived, according to the release. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police learned he was driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Colorado. Rayford also allegedly used a stolen gun, according to the news release, and he was wanted in Wisconsin.
The Division of Criminal probe is continuing its probe. All cops are on administrative leave, which is standard process in use-of-force instances. The officers’ names, departments, and number of shots fired at Rayford have not been revealed in news releases.
