Violent crash in Santa Ana claimed lives of 5 family members, 4 teen victims involved

Six people in one car were involved in a violent crash in Santa Ana late Saturday night. More than half of the victims are local teens, according to the police.

Officer Natalie Garcia of the Santa Ana Police Department said that around 11:30 p.m., officers were sent to the area of West Segerstrom Avenue and South Townsend Street because someone said that a car had hit a tree.

When police arrived at the scene of the accident, they found that there were six people inside the car at the time of the crash: five women and one man. According to their initial investigation, the male driver was going very fast west on Segerstrom and missed a turn, which is what caused the accident.

Officer Garcia said that four of the six victims were declared dead at the scene. A fifth person died at a nearby hospital, and the sixth person is still in very bad shape.

At least two people were thrown out of the car, and a black sedan close was slightly damaged, but no one inside that car was hurt.

Officer Garcia said that the victims were family members, though it wasn’t clear what relationship they had with each other. He also said that impairment may have played a part in the crash.

It was later revealed by police that two of the victims were adults and four were teenagers.

“Three juveniles were pronounced dead at the scene, and one was transported to a hospital where she is in critical but stable condition,” she said. “The two adults were pronounced deceased at the scene.”

“It’s sad that these kids were locals to Santa Ana,” she continued. “It’s a devastating incident.”

Late Sunday morning, a woman who lives near the scene of the crash told KTLA that high-speed crashes are happening more and more often in her area.

“It’s very concerning because in the evenings, I do hear a lot of racing…and [tires] spinning out,” said Rachel Cervantes. “As a parent, it’s sad to know that young kids are gone.”
